http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12503/6877471?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Tue, 18 Apr 2017 15:37:22 +0000 Tech Time VPN Tech Time VPN http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12503/6877471?cpt=8&wpid=2637 KTVX ABC 4 Salt Lake City >> an interesting topic with tech time tuesday with christopher today. >> don't panic. >> i'm kind of panicking. we're talking about sharing of information, right, when companies say we can't share your information, this could be changing in washington right. >> right. so it is really important to pay attention to you las about technology, right. at the end of obama's administration there was a law made that protected your browsing history, all of the things you do on the internet, it protected you from the internet service provider, in making it so they could not check your data, they kontd collect it and store t sell it, so they basically all the data is being collected, it's always being checked because whenever you send information through the interet it's there. but there was a law preventing the internet service provider from storing that, holding on to it and most importantly selling it to other people. >> and so what happened to that law. >> so congress actually just voted to get rid of that. >> why would they do that? >> and it's going to the senate now? >> the reason why the internet service providers were really lobbying for this or pushing for it because it was unfair treatment to them when google and facebook can collected all your information. >> i was just going to say. when i'm on my i pad, if i'm looking up something, every once in a while something from revolve clothes or amazon will come up and i'm like how do they know. >> think about this really carefully because you have a choice whether or not you use google or not, or facebook, right. you have a choice. so in the terms and agreements when you sign up for facebook, you're agreeing to them checking your information. so if you don't like, that don't use facebook. >> interesting. >> google, same thing. there are other internet browsers out there. if you don't want google to collect your information there is a internet browser called tor that encrypts your data, basically what it does, when you tape in a search, it sebds it all the way around the world before it it actually gets to where it goes. >> does it seem like that? is it slower. >> it does slow down. >> oh, well. >> ain't nobody got time for that. >> it doesn't slow down to the point where it basically krims you from browsing the internet. the other thing to be aware of is you don't have a choice for internet service provider, right. any time you go on the internet, that is through the service provider. whether it be comcast, quest or whatever. >> i see. >> so that is where the big variation is, with the service provider, you don't have a choice. if google, facebook, will the others you do have a choice. >> you are saying the internet providers are now able to. >> they are able to collect and they're able to potentially sell your information to advertisers that can throw advertisements at you. another way around this is a service called vpn, do you know what that is. >> it virtual private network. >> so there is usually a cost subscription to this t is usually about $5 to $10 a month but what it does is encrypts your browsing history and encrypts your data. so when you get on to the internet, they don't know where you are. they don't know who you are. and they don't know what are you doing on the pages you are going to. >> oh. >> so now you take the privacy back into your own hands. >> you can put that on your cell phone too. >> you have to be careful when are you searching for a vpn provider because there are some that do and some that don't. is make sure you find one that does include the mobile devices in the subscription model for the virtual private network. >> okay. so how nervous do we need to be? >> it's really not-- it's one of those things, i don't like the word nervous but be aware. so be aware of what is going on and what's happening. data collection has been going on forever. and that's how we have these amazing technologies that we have because now they know how to give us those catered ads and how to give us those marketing things. but also it could be an invasion of praif see if you are not aware of what's going on. >> so it is happening to you right now pretty much on a lot of things. you just need to know it's happening to you and it could happen more. >> who do we know if it passes. >> it's being talked about right now. i will try and keep everyone up to date. >> okay. >> but-- so we don't know. >> just being, yeah, i just wanted people to know that that is what is being talked about. and just be aware of that information. >> how do we find you. >> tech life coach.com or anything tech life coach. i have eaten up the social media.
