WCIA >>ma community this afternoon and it is almost earth day. what better way to take care of the environment than to recycle the things you didn't know to recycle. are joined by - - in urbana. i am really excited because a lot of people don't get to see behind the scenes. give us an overview of the business. >> my great-grandfather started the company in 1950. they purchase twin cities recycling in 1997. we have customers come in. they bring us scrap metal. we break it down and ship it off to be recycled. >>matt: i love that you have that tradition going back to when they find out what they can bring in? >> we get phone calls every day from people that don't realize that we are here and that they can get paid for this material when they bring it in. >>matt: i am surprised, here are chords. you are staying bring it in. >> this is low-grade caliber wire. this is all worth money. we buy this by the pound. >>matt: no kidding. these are other heavier stuff here too. business: businesses can bring different grade of copper wire. a different ratio of insulation. different types of wire. >>matt: i'm pulling this one out too because i recognize this from channel 3. this is like communication wire. those are in there too. what is it that people find cool about bringing stuff here? i know a lot of people that say i made a little of extra money. >> it is. people get a little cash but more than that, it keeps our community clean. pieces of aluminum on the side of the road. people will pick that up because it's worth money. metal is a finite resource, being able to recycle helps that. >>matt: you guys are a fan of earth day. i feel like this is the one that's gotten the most attention. it's copper. people are looking for scrap copper. >> this is a finished copper number one. this is one of the more expensive items we purchase. this has been cut down into signs and the imperfections cut off. >>matt: i am seeing these huge boxes. if someone has something out there, they can bring it in in their own box. >> correct. if they bring it in, we can grade it, and get them the best price. >>matt: you purchase things by weight. >> yes we do. we've got scales for the smaller stuff. we also have a bigger truck scale. we can still take care of you. >>matt: so huge loads as well as small boxes of stuff in your house. i want to go back there because this makes me laugh. it's christmas lights. you always wonder what to do with your christmas lights. here is your answer. i presume these don't work. >> occasionally they do. we usually get a big influx around christmas time and another big influx after christmas. >>matt: i look at these boxes, we see video of boxes in the other room. these are piled high. what's happening with the things in these boxes? >> those are ready to go. they have been sorted, cut, separated. ready to be shipped to another location where they can be melted down. >>matt: it doesn't go into a locations. >> max auto recycling, they deal with cars and auto parts and us that deal with metal and electronics recycling. >>matt: you've got to bring that to the right place but all that takes is a phone call. >> go to >>matt: all in time for earth day. spring cleaning and it's good much.he earth. giving us a
