Some experts say underemployment is a better economic indicator than the unemployment rate. Have a look. http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12941/7002837?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WZDX in almost a decade. 4 point 4 % for america.... and 4 point 9 % for alabama... but that's not the only statistic we're looking into tonight. thanks for joining us... i'm jen jacobson.. and i'm chase gallimore... another important measure... is much harder to calculate... as ben nandy reports... ?under?-employment is rising.... putting many folks in a cycle they can't get out of. ??nats??working??customer: "let me get a ten on number seven too ma'am." phyllis: "yes sir. you doing alright today?"i recently met phylis martin.she's 27.she has one daughter.she has a relatable story... though she's a little shy to tell it."oh my gosh. i'm going to be on tv."she's underemployed.she's been forced to bounce between two jobs to piece together a 40-hour work week.she was close to 40 hours here at this store-and-deli on meridian street.those hours were cut in half when the school year ended."the majority of my business came from the students. since we weren't making much money, i had no choice but to get a second job."she's been to college..."i was in business at the time. hopefully, i'd like to open up my own."...but family obligations put those dreams on hold... half-way through."because my mom had some medical issues, and my sister was in the service. my brother -- he was young at the time. so, i was down to one car, and i chose to quit for a second to help my mom out." that one second turned into five years.underemployment numbers... and their increase... may help give a fuller picture of american employment.the economic policy institute finds that under-employment is hovering around 12-percent.it also found that college grads who haven't completed college... are underemployed to the tune of about 20-percent.martin isn't complaining about her position in life... but she knows... that right now... college is way down on her priority list."i wish i could have a lot more phyllis time, but.. ...i take it as, it's a blessing. i don't regret my daughter, and i'd rather do the right thing than the wrong thing." ?these jobs aren't offering health insurance. ?martin says she had medicaid while she was pregnant... but was dropped after her daughter was born. ?she says... if she has an infection or a bad cold... she has to go on an installment plan to cover it. ?ben nandy, wzdx news. ben... what kind of public assistance has ms. martin gotten throughout all this? ?she says her mother had no assistance when she became disabled... but has since gotten on disability. ?the child obviously gets medicaid until she's 18. ?she gets some assistance from her daughter's dad. ?martin says she can't afford to think about herself. ?she's just hoping she can give her daughter a better shot.
