((denise valdez)) >> and i'm denise valdez. the storm touched down yesterday as a category four hurricane, causing widespread damage across the state. neighbors helped rescue neighbors in jacksonville -- as historic flood waters covered streets. irma's storm surge overwhelmed saint john's river and left entire streets underwater in naples. a day after making landfall in the florida keys mobile homes lay on their sides and many roofs -- completely missing. ((gov. rick scott/florida: "fraom talking to officials in the keys, the water is not working, the sewer is not working and there's no electricity so it's very tough.")) ((denise valdez)) we begin tonight ith team coverage. chief meteorologist tedd florendo's in the weather center, where he's tracking the storm as it heads into georgia. but first.. 8 news now reporter shakala alvaranga has a look at how a local high school is helping a rival miami football team, stranded in las vegas. shakala? ((shakala alvaranga)) >> after beating bishop gorman friday night, 75 people on miami's central high school football team are still in las vegas. but, bishop gorman has been paying for the team's extended stay here at their hotel. a show of support -- at a time when it's desperately needed. >>> ((shakala alvaranga)) it was pouring rain in vegas on friday as miami central handed bishop gorman their second loss in a row. ((shakala alvaranga)) the game was over. but now, it was real life. roland smith junior, head coach, miami central "when we first came out here, we were trying to win the game for us. but when we knew hurricane irma was coming into town, we wanted to make sure we support our city and our state." ((shakala alvaranga)) as hurricane irma forced a days-long closure at airports, the team remains stranded in las vegas. amari daniels, running back, miami central "the storm passed by. we're just praying... making sure that everything is safe back home." ((shakala alvaranga)) today, they're doing what they can with what little they have. "1,2,3 ... focus." ((shakala alvaranga)) their next game is scheduled for thursday in miami, but that likely won't happen. meanwhile.. the rockets are using their hotel parking lot to run drills. roland smith junior, head coach, miami central "we just try to keep them busy, trying to keep them occupied of doing something they love to do, playing football and stuff like that." ((shakala alvaranga)) it hasn't been the most ideal weekend in las vegas. but, a little help from others proved to go a long way. steven grammas, president, lvppa "we reached out to 9/11 tacos. we said hey i know it's short notice but can you get out there and feed about 75 - 80 kids that are stuck. they said no doubt... i can get out there." ((shakala alvaranga)) the local police union provided the lunch.. a small gesture that these players say... mattered. >>> ((shakala alvaranga)) the team is hoping to head back home to miami tomorrow morning. they're still looking for dinner options tonight. meanwhile, the cheerleaders may be stuck here until friday. reporting live shakala alvaranga 8 news now. /// ((dave courvoisier))
