(scott) in the early morning when the sun is coming up and light starts to fall on the sandy hollow clubhouse, one man is already at work. (sound of mower) (scott) that's ray putnam on that mower. he's 90 years old. he started here many years ago. (ray putnam, maintenance man) "i think it was '92 or '93. it's somewhere in that area." (scott) that was after he retired from being a truck driver. (putnam) "i get up at four every morning." (sound of mower) (scott) he's on the course well before the golfers are. he mows the areas around the greens and the tees. (ken giesler, sandy hollow superintendent) "he has a system. he does four laps because he wants the golfer to make sure he has got, that they've got quality grass that they can hit from right around the greens and tees. he moves right along." (putnam) "you've got sidewinders there and the decks move back and forth, and when i go around you can move this deck either way depending on wich way you're going over toward the sand trap. the idea is not go get in the sand trap. ha! (scott) have you ever had any mishaps like that? (putnam) "yes ha-ha! i had one yesterday. ha- ha! (scott) there are times when he has to stop and move rakes, rocks and debris. (scott question) you've been doing this for so many years. you clearly enjoy it. wht do you like about it? (putnam) "you're outside. i don't know. and i meet a lot of people here." (giesler) "he never misses any work. he always wants to work and lots of times i can't even get him to go home." (scott) so what's ray's secret to being so fit and having so much energy? (putnam) "the only thing i know is eat right, sleep right and exercise." (scott) putnam gets plenty of exercise. when he's not on a mower you're likely to find him on an exercise bike or a regular bike. he's a masters champion bicyclist. he just competed in a 12 and a half mile race in moriarty, new mexico. (putnam) "i broke a national record. (scott) ray will continue to ride his bike, but his mowing days at sandy hollow will soon be over as he retires at the end of this season. (scott question) what made you decide it's time to hang it up? (putnam) "my wife ha- ha!" ((scott)) ray and his wife plan to do some traveling. ray is originally from danville, illinois. actor/comedian dick van dyke was one of his classmates. ((emily)) a photographer captures the
