(tim olson, kx news) (tim olson, kx news) north dakota is full of entrepreneurial minded people. consider the countless pride of dakota products you can find - or our state's governor, whose work in the tech industry drew the attention of people like bill gates. but in a house just north of mandan, you'll find a woman whose creations have something extra special - something motherly. that's where i found someone you should know. (tim olson, kx news) erica hager's journey as an entrepreneur began with a kick. (erica hager - owner, bison booties) "kick kick kick!" (olson) or, several kicks. (hager) "my daughter had these kicky little feet, and nothing stayed on. i just thought, i can't find anything that works to fit on her feet." (olson) she saw a problem - so the stay-at-home mom grabbed a sewing machine and some fabric, and solved it. (hager) "i combined the things i knew and the skills that i had and the tools that i had, and came out with the first pair of bison booties a few months later." (olson) hager's invention - a half- sock, half-slipper that even the kickiest little feet can't kick off - was perfect for her kids. little did she know... (hager) "i call it a happy accident." (olson) bison booties would find feet far beyond those of her growing children. (hager) "due to many requests, i now carry through men's sizes. so yeah. anything from newborns to adults size 13." (olson) the north dakota-made footwear has been sold in all 50 states and over a dozen countries - been featured in national magazines - and even made cameos on tv shows like parenthood. (hager) "here i am in rural north dakota, on the prairie, trying to get out to the school carpool, and i'm sending these booties to a celebrity in hollywood!" (olson) these days, one sewing machine in rural mandan isn't enough to keep up with demand. so erica hager contracts fellow mothers for help. (hager) "for some of them, it's netflix time, where she can cut fabric and watch netflix. for another mom, they might be saving up for an adoption and so it's an adoption fund. somebody else, it might be their disneyworld trip. it's a great way to work together." (olson) and for hager, at the end of the day - it still all about the feet those booties found in the first place. (hager) "for me, i want to be a stay- at-home mom first, and i want to have bison booties work around that." (olson) erica hager - a dedicated mom and one of north dakota's most successful entrepreneurs - is someone you should know. in rural mandan, tim olson, kx news. (tim olson, kx news) hager says one batch of about 2- to 300 bison booties takes about a month to craft from start to finish. (tim olson, kx news) and if you know someone i should know - drop me a line. i'm looking to meet people from all over the region with interesting stories. email me at [email protected] (alysia
