"i don't know how we would have evacuate the children the safety of our children it's very worrisome and our community our children are scared but our community is in an uproar over that " vivienna orcutt - a tribal council member with the hoopa valley tribe - concerned about the close proximity of the proposed location to the school where her daughters go... "the humboldt county board of supervisors and the planning commission have not had a transparent process with the hoopa valley tribe on the permitting process" the trinity river -- supplies water to nearly 4,000 people in hoopa. "we have a duty to protect the tribes water supply and you hear a hash lab everyone thinks butane whatever chemicals are going to be used and if there was a spill or anything of such an explosion what measures are going to be taken to protect the tribes water supply." but according to supervisor ryan sundberg -- there are heavy regulations on legal cannabis manufacturing facilities. "it's very unassuming, it far enough away from the school and they can only uses gases so if there was a spill, it would go up in the air not into the water." on december 14th -- the planning commission voted to rezone the land -- from highway service commercial use to heavy industrial. "mercer fraser has use that property for decades as concrete and asphalt production and also resource extraction from gravel so the rezoning is making it consistent with what the uses are." this -- opening up the land for marijuana processing use. but sundberg says -- it's a long process before a facility would even be built. "they still have to go through state and county permitting." the hoopa valley tribe -- hoping the county will prevent the facility -- from getting permitted. "i don't think it's fair that the humboldt county board of supervisors asked the most innocent residents of humboldt county which is our children are still school children to coexist with a combustible hash like across the street." and nazy i did reach out to mercer fraiser... they gave us some info on the phone - but would not repsond to requests for an interview. their president justin zabel says -- if they build the facility -- they'll be looking to manufacturing companies to rent the space. now the rezongin request goes to the board of superviosrs and they'll be voting on that on march 6. reporting in eureka.. alex hasenstab.. north coast news. end on cam nazy thank you alex. we'll be following this story as it develops. and you can check out our website for more details. end end stinger
