41st annual Coast Con kicks off

By Clip Syndicate
Coast Con, Mississippi’s longest running and largest science fiction, fantasy, and gaming convention, kicked off today at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. This is the 41st annual Coast Con. "If you are into comics or any type of anime fandom or any type of sci-fi fandom, it’s a must do on the Coast." Gaming, cosplay, and fandom are taking over the Coast this weekend as Coast Con opens its doors to the public. Coast Con attendee Anthony Westmoreland said, “There is no can or cannot when it comes to Coast Con, when it comes to comic cons, when it comes to this kind of event, everything is pretty much welcomed.” All ages and characters are welcomed to the weekend long convention, featuring merchants, costume contests, signings, and even panel discussions all tailored towards fiction, fantasy, and gaming. Biloxi resident Vinnie Atwood said, “A geek is someone who is super passionate about their hobbies, like anime or Pokémon or stuff. This is a geek convention and I’m a huge geek.” A big hobby shared amongst Coast Con goers is cosplay where they wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character. Some attendees take it as far as inventing original characters. Attendee Keith McGuire said, “This took about a week, but it was rushed, but normally it takes about a month, they’re about 400 to 600 dollars to get the head and the tail.” Coast Con is expected to bring in about one thousand people to the Mississippi Coast Convention Center this weekend. Weekend and single day tickets are still available at the door. “It gives us a chance to be who we are.”
