(alton) i was an only child. my sister died when she was two months old. i was two years old, so i don't really remember her. i think about her all the time. even though i don't know her, she's still a part of me. growing up as an only child everything i did was individualized. i found the sport of mixed martial arts. it just naturally clicked with me. it was something about the sport- i just got the jitters right away. alton has a family of his own... and having a four-year-old son has given him a different perspective... (alton) it's not about me anymore, it's about him. i look at it as "what legacy do i want to leave for him?" do i want him to think big? where you can reach for the stars, but at the very least you're going to land on the moon. cunningham's coach, army veteran and marshall arts master lawrence pearsons been there since day one... alton asked: can you make me a champion? pearson said absolutely, but you have to put in the work... (lawrence pearson) i've never seen a passion from another person in mma like his. he puts in the time. he comes to sparring. he comes to the technique classes. most guys think they can be a fighter in two or three months. i actually held him back for two years before he actually fought. so if you think you're going to do this in three months, and be at this level, you're wrong. it's a long way from madison to las vegas... but that distance might close a lit bit next week... (lawrence) for him to make it the ufc as a full-time fighter, that changes not only his life, but also lets people know that we're doing martial arts on a big scene here in our gym. biggest fight of his life... alton's gonna have butterflies when he steps in the ufc octagon... (alton) if i didn't get any nerves, then what am i here for?
