Part 1 WMGT c1 3 b15 bill shanks: coach mark daniel is with us from rutland. he's in his third season at rutland. his first season 0-9 and then 2-8 last year. coach when you took this job you knew it was a little bit of a process only getting 2 wins in 2 years, but going into this year do you feel al little bit better about what you've been able to accomplish? mark daniel: i know last year we didn't have a win but we played better and had players stay with us for two years anda ctrually we were pretty close to th eplayoffs. we lost several games right at the end. just a lack of speed. we just didn't have the talent to stop the big play at the end of the game. but you take those games and we would've been in the playoffs, so it was close. it was very close. now it's like a re- building situation again because we lost so many players. we have a lot of youngsters playing this year. bill shanks: are the youngsters encouraged? are they enthused to get out there? despite the 0-9 record a year ago because that's tough isn't it? mark daniel: it can be very discouraging if people think of it in those terms. we're explaining to them that we're the future. i've seen a lot of program begin from a low level and built right back up into championship and renowned status. so it could be done with hard work, if they're willing to work and we got a good coaching staff pushing them. the young kids seem to be responding very well. bill shanks: let's talk defense. four back on defense including shemar robinson your team leader, you're really counting on him. and then a secondary guy a defensive back, jonas delira right? mark daniel: yessir. they've been with the progam for three years, in the weight room with what we're doing and the philosophy that we have and so they should be team leaders for us this year. and hopefully they'll... it's going to be a difficult job for them because they don'thave as many older experienced guys around them as they've had in the past. so we've really depended on them a lot to step up and show teh young guys the right way and not get discouraged and keep them motivated with the startup this season. bill shanks: all right, that's the defense. there's a lot of young players on the offense for rutland we'll talk about that with
