http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12490/7385639?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Thu, 12 Jul 2018 21:59:44 +0000 Mazda Toyota Fish lawsuit Construction for Mazda-Toyota manufacturing plant is put on hold with concerns for a species of fish at risk. http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12490/7385639?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WAAY ABC Huntsville, AL a plan ten years in the making - now put on hold - over concerns for a threatened species of fish living near the construction site of the massive mazda-toyota manufacturing u-s-a incorporated plant... this is a look from our waay 31 skytracker of the proposed site in huntsville- annexed limestone county... thanks for joining us, i'm dan shaffer. and i'm demetria mcclenton. the center for biological diversity -- is suing the u-s fish and wildlife service for failing to protect the "spring pygmy" sunfish. the threatened species lives in beaverdam creek -- jsut east of powell road near the mazda-toyota site. the lawsuit claims mazda toyota will disrupt water quality and flow where the tiny fish lives... the environmental group claims -- without proper mitigation -- the spring pygmy sunfish could be pushed to extinction. waay 31's breken terry spoke with mayor tommy battle and the environmental group -- to see how they are working together to protect the fish's habitat... breken? i am here along powell road where on one side will be the mazda toyota plant and on the other is where the spring pygmy sunfish lives. attorney's for the environmental group suing to protect the fish tell me they believe mazda toyota wants to do the right thing. bennett- the hope is that we can have an auto plant and a future for the spring pygmy sun fish and they don't have to be mutually exclusive. we reached out to elise bennett who is an attorney with the center for biological diversity. she says talks with mazda toyota officials have been promising. she says mazda toyota even took it upon themselves to temporarily halt ground work at the site of their new plant to do additional surveys in order to better protect the fish. bennett- we're encouraged that they've stopped work at the site and they seem to really want to do the right thing for the spring pygmy sunfish and so the plan is to move forward and try to find ways to avoid harming this fish so it can survive into the future. huntsville mayor tommy battle told waay31 they have done a grading plan that takes water away from the swamps and does not disrupt the water flow for the fishes habitat. battle- there is no longer run off water going in that may have pesticides on it. we are no longer pumping up irrigation for that so the site today is better than it was last year before toyota came along. it's unclear how long ground work could be halted on the mazda toyota project but they are still shooting for a groundbreaking this fall. live in limestone county, breken terry waay 31
